I love gadgets. When my sister was engaged we went to Bed, Bath & Beyond to start her gift registry. We spent hours oohing and aahing over the various interesting cooking and cleaning implements. In my opinion, gadgets needn’t be overly complicated, but the more different and fun to use they are, the better. After trolling the internet for funky cleaning gadgets, I came up with a final list of the most intriguing out there. In no particular order:

Cyber Clean — Cyber Clean is perfect for cleaning keyboards and things with buttons and small crevices. The elastic, dough-like substance can reach into nooks and crannies to absorb dirt and other residues where regular dusters or cleaning cloths cannot. It doesn’t leave a residue, has no harmful chemicals, is reusable and 100% bio-degradable. Plus, it’s like using a cross between Silly Putty and Gak (remember Gak?). Who doesn’t like Silly Putty and Gak (without the smell)?

Cyber Clean

Evriholder Slipper Genie — If your office has hardwood or tile floors, this has got to be the most fun way to clean them. If you have allergies, sweeping the floor can cause breathing problems from all the dirt and dust it kicks up. And it’s very hard to get it all. For those of us cleaning-disabled individuals, sometimes hiring a cleaning service to come weekly or even daily is just not enough. A pen here, a piece of paper there, a file set down at random, a jacket hung over a chair…it all adds up, and quicker than you know the previously spotless area is once again a huge mess. Here are some handy tips to help you survive between visits:

10. Air freshener:

At the very least, it’ll make your office smell clean.

9. Keep Handi Wipes, well, handy:

Emergency cleaning supplies are especially good to have for those unforeseen circumstances. It’s a shame that only babies and toddlers have spill-proof sippy cups.

8. Hang up coats, jackets, ties, etc.:

If you don’t have a closet, get hooks. If you work in a cubicle, try suggesting a communal area where everyone can hang up their coats and gear. Just like in one’s bedroom at home, clothing tossed around equals instant mess.

7. Get a computer brush to get rid of crumbs:

Someone gave me one of those recently and it is my new favorite toy. As someone who eats at my desk, it really makes [desk] life so much cleaner. With a simple swipe of the brush crumbs and dust disappear.

6. Keep food in mini-fridge/special drawer, wash out dirty mugs:

I have trouble getting through the day without eating some sort of pick-me-up, so I keep “desk snacks” in a special place nearby. Keeping lunch or snacks in a designated drawer (mine are under the desk) reduces the amount of visible clutter. So does getting rid of empty/dirty mugs or cups. Don’t just get a new cup of coffee; make sure to wash/throw out the old one(s), too.

5. Dispose of extraneous stuff:

Old papers, broken pens, receipts from 2005, a paperweight holding down air…if you aren’t using it, get rid of it.

4. File, file, file:

This one is basic. Filing cabinets exist for a reason. Use them!

3. Straighten piles on the desk:

For those things that need to remain on your desk for some purpose, be it they can’t be filed yet, are still being used or whatever, there’s no reason they can’t be neat. Piles have a way of multiplying themselves like the mops in Fantasia. At the very least, it won’t look so cluttered. Keeping the piles contained will probably make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for faster.

2. Have a garbage can nearby:

This is a biggie. Proximity is everything. The farther away you have to go to get to a garbage can, the less often you do it and the greater the buildup of trash and junk. It doesn’t have to be a large receptacle, just something that will fit in your office/workspace near your desk.

1. A place for everything and everything in its place:

As much of a cliché as it is, this old adage is the most important. For the office or for anywhere in your house, having a drawer, a rack, a shelf, any designated space at all for your stuff is essential. The counter in my bedroom was always such a mess. I’d organize it, but within 3 days it would be back to complete chaos. Someone gave me a small, free-standing shelf, and it has made all the difference. Along with having little containers to organize other things like medicines, jewelry, etc., my counter has remained organized for weeks. In- and out-boxes are a blessing, as are desk organizers and pencil holders. All of these are easily obtainable from Staples or Office Max or any office supply company.

How Hiring Professional Cleaners Improves the Quality of Cleaning and Improves Work Performance

While many praise multi-tasking, in truth multi-tasking is a question of quality verses quantity. I know an employer and on every job interview he asks the interviewee, “If you have 3 tasks to do and each task takes an hour but you only have 2 hours to do them what do you do?” The common answer (and the one that denies them the job) is “I try to do them in 2 hours.” The right answer is, “I do 2 of them and I do the 3^rd one at a later time.” What this question reveals is an important outlook: Are you interested in making sure the job is done correctly and be a little delayed or are you interested in just making sure the job is done within the correct time frame but with low quality. Or to put it more simply, “Are you more interested in the quality of the work or the quantity of the work?” Certain jobs take time to do and rushing through them doesn’t improve work performance. Or to quote my father, “Nine pregnant women can’t have a baby in a month.”

We know that talking on a phone while driving causes more accidents and driver worse than drivers who don’t multi-task (all else being equal). Research supports the idea that multi-tasking reduces work performance. A study published in the American Psychological Society’s Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance found that people who multitask are actually less productive than those who focus on one project at a time. More specifically, the research discovered that people actually lose time when they must switch from one task to another.

According to David Meyer, one of the three researchers who led the study and whose ongoing research on multitasking as a psychology professor at the University of Michigan continues to be highlighted by the media worldwide: “Trying to do two or three things at once or in quick succession can take longer overall than doing them one at a time and may leave you with reduced brainpower to perform each task.” Meyer and his fellow researchers refer to this downtime as the “switch cost,” which, they say, occurs in two distinct stages: goal shifting (I want to do this instead of that) and rule activation (I’m turning off the rules for that task and switching them on for this one).

Research published by the National Institute of Mental Health not only supports these findings, but also shows that the time lapse is longer when subjects are asked to immediately switch back to a task they were performing than when they are allowed to wait a bit longer, which means more costly downtime for employers. And according to Meyer’s co-researcher Joshua Rubinstein, no industry is immune: “If you went in to an industry and identified a bunch of tasks that people in that industry do, you could very easily estimate what the losses were from having employees go through these shifts between tasks.”

According to Meyer, “Not being able to concentrate for, say, tens of minutes at a time, may mean it’s costing a company as much as 20 percent to 40 percent.” What this means is that that by asking workers to take time out of their day to clean as opposed to hiring professional cleaners doesn’t end up saving money since the result is longer hours (more pay) and/or work performance which results in attracting less customers to your business.

15 Ways to Tell Which Cleaning Company One Should Use

There are many cleaning companies out there and the difference between an adequate, bad, and excellent cleaning company really make a difference. So how does one know which cleaning company to hire? There are some important factors to consider before hiring a cleaning company. Here are 15 of them:

1. Get price quotes from at least three companies.
There are a few reasons why this should be done. Not only to know which cleaning company is the best priced but also to see how much a gap there is in the prices for the same service. “You get what you pay for” might be cliché but that doesn’t make it untrue. While if the differences in prices aren’t so great, it’s probably best to go with whatever cleaning company gives you the most bang for your buck. But if the discrepancy in prices is exponentially different, this should tell you something and give you a reason to be skeptical.

Procter & Gamble surveyed 1,000 U.S. school teachers showed that 94% of teachers believe that students learn better in a clean classroom. The survey also found that 42% of the teachers clean their own classroom. 51% of teachers admitted to not giving out certain work in class for fear of having to clean up the mess made as a result of said work and group projects.

What the majority of the survey shows is that besides for teachers having to spend their day teacher, they are also responsible for cleaning up their classroom. The added work of cleaning up their classroom leads to teachers giving out less work if it results in less cleaning. As a result of this, Bounty (part of Procter & Gamble) along with PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Today created “We Love Our School” week, where parents and volunteers help schools clean their classroom. One such volunteer is actress, Julianne Moore.
