Kitchens can be difficult to keep clean in the best of circumstances.  In an office, when the “kitchen” is really a kitchenette the size of a broom closet (if not the broom closet itself!) being used by 10, 20, 30+ people, it can get pretty disgusting pretty quickly.  Dirty mugs will accumulate by the dozens on a daily basis, spilled coffee will be ignored, used napkins and other disposable items will miss the garbage can and/or be left stranded on floors, counters or tables making the entire area a cesspool of Gross.

It shouldn’t be difficult to keep a small area clean and tidy.  Make sure everyone who uses the kitchenette (or may potentially use it) knows the DOs and DON’Ts of Kitchenette Etiquette:

1. DO keep paper towels and soap (both dish and regular cleanser) by the sink at all times.  Always have something readily available with which to clean up inevitable spills and messes.
2. DO keep extra garbage receptacles (be it cans or bags) around in case the main one is full.  Not having a place to put trash is one of the reasons why it may be left out on tables and counters, or overflowing to the floor.
3. DO throw out all trash!  Empty sugar and oatmeal packets, used paper goods and plasticware, dirty napkins and paper towels, etc. should all be disposed of right away.
4. DON’T leave the vicinity when you have something in the microwave or toaster.  This is a safety hazard!  If put in for too long and left unattended, some things may catch fire and at the very least set off the fire alarm.  This actually happened at a place I once worked, even though there were signs up everywhere saying not to leave the toaster and microwave unattended.  The smoke alarm went off and the fire department had to come (by law), wasting not only our time, but potentially taking the firemen away from more serious cases.
5. DON’T walk away from a spill anywhere, on the floors, counters, fridge or microwave.  If something drips or crumbles, immediately wipe it up, even if that means going to the bathroom down the hall to get toilet paper to use because you’ve run out of paper towels.
6. DON’T leave dirty dishes in the sink or on other surfaces.  Wash them right away!  There’s nothing more aggravating than going to get your morning coffee and seeing plates with caked on food just sitting there, accumulating bacteria and icky-ness.
7. DON’T leave anything in the fridge for more than a week.  Even if it’s in a container and won’t expire for a month, chances are if it’s left in the fridge for over a week, it’ll stay there for that whole month or longer.  Most office kitchenettes only have a mini-fridge anyway, so leaving food in there for a long time just takes up space that other people could use to put their lunch.
8. DO keep all food in the refrigerator in some sort of container or bag.  No food should be left out to stick to the shelves and drip (which, of course, should then be immediately cleaned, see #4 above).
9. DO keep all food and containers covered in the microwave.  The microwave is just about the easiest thing to get dirty.  No one notices/cares to wipe it out when things (especially food with tomato sauce) splatter on the inside.
10. DO wash out the coffee pot at the end of the day.  The person who finishes the pot should be the one to rinse it out.  Nobody wants to come to work in the morning craving that cup of caffeine, only to see that the carafe still has stone cold, day-old coffee in it.
11. DO keep things neat.  Have places set for extra cutlery, mugs, plates, soap, sponges, etc. is an easy way to keep things organized.  Making sure the area is tidy really helps to maintain cleanliness.
12. DO hang a list of these instructions in a visible spot.  If you have documentation on what is expected of everyone using the kitchenette, no one should have an excuse as to why they ignore the rules.
13. DON’T be lenient; provide consequences for those who disregard the rules.  Make sure that everyone knows you mean business.  The consequences are up to you, but enforce them.

10. Air freshener:

At the very least, it’ll make your office smell clean.

9. Keep Handi Wipes, well, handy:

Emergency cleaning supplies are especially good to have for those unforeseen circumstances.  It’s a shame that only babies and toddlers have spill-proof sippy cups.

8. Hang up coats, jackets, ties, etc.:

If you don’t have a closet, get hooks.  If you work in a cubicle, try suggesting a communal area where everyone can hang up their coats and gear.  Just like in one’s bedroom at home, clothing tossed around equals instant mess.

7. Get a computer brush to get rid of crumbs:

Someone gave me one of those recently and it is my new favorite toy.  As someone who eats at my desk, it really makes [desk] life so much cleaner.  With a simple swipe of the brush crumbs and dust disappear.

6. Keep food in mini-fridge/special drawer, wash out dirty mugs:

I have trouble getting through the day without eating some sort of pick-me-up, so I keep “desk snacks” in a special place nearby.  Keeping lunch or snacks in a designated drawer (mine are under the desk) reduces the amount of visible clutter.  So does getting rid of empty/dirty mugs or cups.  Don’t just get a new cup of coffee; make sure to wash/throw out the old one(s), too.

5. Dispose of extraneous stuff:

Old papers, broken pens, receipts from 2005, a paperweight holding down air…if you aren’t using it, get rid of it.

4. File, file, file:

This one is basic.  Filing cabinets exist for a reason.  Use them!

3. Straighten piles on the desk:

For those things that need to remain on your desk for some purpose, be it they can’t be filed yet, are still being used or whatever, there’s no reason they can’t be neat.  Piles have a way of multiplying themselves like the mops in Fantasia.  At the very least, it won’t look so cluttered.  Keeping the piles contained will probably make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for faster.

2. Have a garbage can nearby:

This is a biggie.  Proximity is everything.  The farther away you have to go to get to a garbage can, the less often you do it and the greater the buildup of trash and junk.  It doesn’t have to be a large receptacle, just something that will fit in your office/workspace near your desk.

1. A place for everything and everything in its place:

As much of a cliché as it is, this old adage is the most important.  For the office or for anywhere in your house, having a drawer, a rack, a shelf, any designated space at all for your stuff is essential.  The counter in my bedroom was always such a mess.  I’d organize it, but within 3 days it would be back to complete chaos.  Someone gave me a small, free-standing shelf, and it has made all the difference.  Along with having little containers to organize other things like medicines, jewelry, etc., my counter has remained organized for weeks.  In- and out-boxes are a blessing, as are desk organizers and pencil holders.  All of these are easily obtainable from Staples or Office Max or any office supply company.

All day, revelers swarmed 42nd Street, partying and jostling for the best vantage points to see the famed ball-drop.  But just a half hour into the new year, over 150 sanitation workers were already on the job cleaning the streets.  Less than 6 hours later, Times Square was once again open to traffic.  22 trucks, 24 mechanical sweepers and 37 backpack blowers were used to clear an estimated 56 tons of confetti, party hats and other remainders of the festivities so efficiently.  Check out footage of the clean up from the Associated Press: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_K4amg_Em4.

We know that talking on a phone while driving causes more accidents and driver worse than drivers who don’t multi-task (all else being equal). Research supports the idea that multi-tasking reduces work performance.  A study published in the American Psychological Society’s Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance found that people who multitask are actually less productive than those who focus on one project at a time. More specifically, the research discovered that people actually lose time when they must switch from one task to another.

According to David Meyer, one of the three researchers who led the study and whose ongoing research on multitasking as a psychology professor at the University of Michigan continues to be highlighted by the media worldwide:  “Trying to do two or three things at once or in quick succession can take longer overall than doing them one at a time and may leave you with reduced brainpower to perform each task.” Meyer and his fellow researchers refer to this downtime as the “switch cost,” which, they say, occurs in two distinct stages: goal shifting (I want to do this instead of that) and rule activation (I’m turning off the rules for that task and switching them on for this one).

Research published by the National Institute of Mental Health not only supports these findings, but also shows that the time lapse is longer when subjects are asked to immediately switch back to a task they were performing than when they are allowed to wait a bit longer, which means more costly downtime for employers. And according to Meyer’s co-researcher Joshua Rubinstein, no industry is immune: “If you went in to an industry and identified a bunch of tasks that people in that industry do, you could very easily estimate what the losses were from having employees go through these shifts between tasks.”

According to Meyer, “Not being able to concentrate for, say, tens of minutes at a time, may mean it’s costing a company as much as 20 percent to 40 percent.” What this means is that that by asking workers to take time out of their day to clean as opposed to hiring professional cleaners doesn’t end up saving money since the result is longer hours (more pay) and/or work performance which results in attracting less customers to your business.

Green cleaning is important for one’s health and the environment, but before buying environmentally friendly cleaning products it’s important to know that the green cleaning products one will use actually work and are really environmentally friendly and not just advertising that they are.  The following are criteria I recommend using to know which products are really green and which products actually clean:

Ingredients:

It’s important when looking for green cleaning supplies to find environmentally friendly cleaning solutions that contain as few ingredients as possible. And also with as few ingredients that sound like they are scientific names and unpronounceable chemicals in them as possible. The more natural the ingredients are (as opposed to synthetically created ingredients) the better.

Green cleaning products don’t have to list what ingredients are in their products since listing them would give away their “secret formula.” Though green cleaning products don’t have to mention the ingredients they contain, there are green cleaning products which do. It’s best to only use green cleaning products that list the ingredients they use; this is because if you know what are in the products, you can find out if the cleaning solutions are actually green and can actually clean. Also, if a cleaning manufacturer cares about providing environmentally friendly products (as opposed to selling green cleaning because they are popular with consumers) than they wouldn’t feel the need to have a “secret formula” but would want their consumers to know that the products they are buying are actually green. After all, if a cleaning product is hiding what the product contains there is probably a reason why. It’s important to be a little skeptical when looking for green cleaning supplies.

When looking at the ingredients of green cleaning products it’s important to make sure that the products have materials that don’t hurt the ozone, to make sure the ingredients are biodegradable, contain no bleach, no phosphates, no (or at least very low) VOCs (volatile organic compounds), no substances that come from petroleum, but use renewable resources instead, no added dyes (except for safety reasons). It’s also important to make sure that the products don’t have any added fragrances (just because a product smell clean doesn’t mean it is. Added scents are put into products to portray added cleanliness, but in reality, a clean scent doesn’t make something cleaner than something that lacks a clean smell).

Packaging:

Though a clean smell doesn’t mean something is clean, in the case of green cleaning it’s important to judge a book by its cover. It’s important to make sure that the packaging of the product is recyclable. After all, if a product really cares about the environment wouldn’t they want to make the product come in a recyclable packaging?

Another thing to look for is if the cleaning product comes in a concentrated formula where you add water and does the package have instructions for how much water to add? Also, does the product come with refillable bottles and if so does the package mention how to buy refills?

Other Important Things to Look For:

Price-It’s best to check out similar green cleaning products and if a product costs more than other similar products, it’s best to find out why. Why pay for than you need to? If a product seems to be expensive, it’s best to know that it’s worth it before hand and to see if the product is integral or if it can be replaced with another similar cleaning solution.

Performance-It’s important to make sure that what you are buying works. Why go on a blind purchase (unless you are sure that the product you’re getting is environmentally friendly and cleans well). It’s important to Google the product and check out reviews to hear what other people have to say before one buys the product.

Another important factor is to make sure that the product wasn’t test on animals; many green cleaning products follow this rule and don’t test their product on animals.

1. Get price quotes from at least three companies.
There are a few reasons why this should be done. Not only to know which cleaning company is the best priced but also to see how much a gap there is in the prices for the same service. “You get what you pay for” might be cliché but that doesn’t make it untrue.
