New Year’s In Times Square: The Aftermath
Walking down the street by my office yesterday, I kept noticing all these colored dots of tissue paper on the curb, drifting in the wind. It took me a moment, but I realized, just a few blocks away is Times Square and the mother of all New Year’s parties was just a few days ago. While the detritus was mostly contained and taken care of, a few last remnants of the celebrations continue to linger.
All day, revelers swarmed 42nd Street, partying and jostling for the best vantage points to see the famed ball-drop. But just a half hour into the new year, over 150 sanitation workers were already on the job cleaning the streets. Less than 6 hours later, Times Square was once again open to traffic. 22 trucks, 24 mechanical sweepers and 37 backpack blowers were used to clear an estimated 56 tons of confetti, party hats and other remainders of the festivities so efficiently. Tourists and natives alike were amazed at the rapidity of the cleanup. Though it was a warmer than usual night, the winds made cleaning up difficult; gusts kept blowing confetti and other piles of debris back onto the streets and sidewalks. Sanitation workers tried to make the best of it, though, holding on to the party atmosphere to get them through the cold and arduous night. “The Department looks forward to this celebration each and every year,” Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said. “Sweeping in the New Year has become a DSNY tradition and we are proud to be an essential part of it.” Hear what they had to say about it in this segment from Rock Center with Brian Williams: http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/clean-sweep-cleaning-up-after-new-years-biggest-party/6200wrn.
I don’t know about you, but I am impressed by the amazing clean up job done by New York City’s sanitation department and would like to thank them for a job well done. Not many people think about what goes on after the party is over and the celebrants go home. It’s not easy to put an office building to rights, let alone rid the streets of New York City of the leftover trash and refuse of millions of people.
Happy New Year from 4 Star General Cleaning! May 2012 be a year of joy, health, happiness, and cleanliness.

Well I am not from around those parts, but that’s a lot of rubbish on the street! Makes you think where does it all go… and this is why it is important to use recyclable and/or biodegradable products so that we don’t harm the environment.
Otherwise toxic trash piles might try to takeover one day.. just a small joke but its good to keep things everywhere safe and clean.
By the way yes that was a really quick action by the NYC sanitation department, just the way as it should be
And a happy new year to you too
